Alanya, 133 km from Antalya city center, is built on a small peninsula. It is surrounded by the Taurus Mountains in the north, the Mediterranean in the south, Manavgat in the west, Gazipaşa in the east and Gündoğmuş in the northwest. It is unknown when and by whom it was founded for the first time. It has a deep-rooted historical past dating back to ancient times. The examinations carried out in the Kadıini Cave, 12 km from the town center, revealed that the region's history dates back to 20,000 BC. Alanya was a shelter for pirates in ancient times. In the Byzantine Period, it was called Kalanoros. During the Arab raids in the 7th century, many castles were built to defend the city. Anatolian Seljuk Ruler Alaeddin Keykubad I, who conquered the city in the 13th century, changed the city's name to Alaiye. In the city, which lived its heyday at that time, many historical monuments still standing today were built. The city was turned into a navy base. Alaiye was taken into the borders of the Ottoman Empire in 1471. It was a province of Cyprus in 1571, to Konya in 1864, to Antalya in 1868 and became the district of Antalya in 1871. The name Alaiye to Alanya by Atatürk, who visited the district in 1935. Today, many Europeans live in Alanya by acquiring property and settling in. Especially in the summer months, the district takes the appearance of a big city with its increasing population. Alanya's economy is based on agriculture, tourism and service sectors.
